Indoor Training Sessions (U5-U6) | … More Warm-ups and Small-sided Games

Substitute any of the following for the warm-up or small-sided game.

British Bulldog
Field: Full gym.
Players: Each player has a ball.
Coaches: Start the game as the bulldogs.
Instructions:

  1. Players line up on one end and bulldogs (coaches) start in middle.
  2. On “Go!”, players all dribble together trying to get to the other side while bulldogs try to kick their ball away.
  3. If players ball is kicked away they become bulldogs.
  4. Players who reach the other end without having their ball kicked wait for everyone to collect either as a bulldog or dribbler before game restarts.

Option: If players keep their ball close to them, the bulldog can’t kick their ball away.

Catch the Pigeon
Field: Set out two parallel lines of cones 10 yards apart.
Players: Each player stands beside a cone facing into the centre and across from another player.
Coaches: Stand with balls at one end in centre of cones.
Instructions:

  1. Have one team put on the pinnies.
  2. Assign numbers to each pair of players facing each other.
  3. Call out a number and then play a ball (pigeon) down the centre of the cones.
  4. Players whose number is called must try to get the ball and dribble it back to their spot to put the pigeon into the cage.
  5. The lines of players can be teams and count up how many pigeons they catch.
  6. Multiple balls can be going at the same time.

Options:

  1. Players all start in a bigger cage and bring the ball back there instead.
  2. Call out multiple numbers for a ball and play 2v2 or 3v3.
  3. Set up a goal at one end and play 1v1. If score goal, the pigeon is set free.
Follow the Leader
Field: Full gym.
Players: Each players has a ball.
Coaches: At least one coach a ball.


Instructions:

  1. Dribble and have players follow you and do what you do.
  2. Call out as you do any of the following moves: stop, change directions, feint, scissors, step-over, left foot-right foot shuffle, toe taps, roll back (and forth), pull back, change speed, play body ball.
  3. Dribble between moves.

Option: Let the players take turns leading.

Food Court
Field: Place cones to mark off a 15 by 15 yard area.
Players: Each player has a ball and finds an open space inside the box.
Coaches: Line up outside the box or roam with players.
Instructions:

  1. Assign each side of the square a food (Pizza, Fries, etc).
  2. Call out a food and players dribble to the appropriate side of the food court.
Gates
Field: Full gym. Setup as many gates (or goals) of cones (3 to 4 feet apart) as you have cones.
Players: Each player has a ball and finds an open space.
Coaches: Line up on the side or roam with players.
Instructions:

  1. On “Go!”, players dribble through the gates in order to score.
  2. Have players count how many goals they score in 30 seconds. Note: If players dribble through only one goal, setup a rule to protect against this.
  3. On next run, ask them to try to beat their score by one goal.

Option: Ask players to dribble with left foot or right foot.

Get Outta There!
Field: Place cones to mark off a 10 by 15 yard area with a goal at each end.
Players: Line up single file beside coach near centre.
Coaches: Stands with balls on side at half line.
Instructions:

  1. Divide the players into two teams and have one team wear the pinnies.
  2. Have one team line up in single file to left of coach and other team to your right.
  3. When you kick a ball onto the field the first player in each line runs out and tries to score on their opponent’s goal.
  4. If a goal is scored or the balls goes out of bounds, you yell “Get outta there!” and play a new ball into the field for the next two players.

Options:

  1. Vary service of ball. Sometimes play it to one player, sometimes toss the ball up in the air.
  2. Call out “Two!” and have the first two players in each line play 2v2.
Paint the Field
Field: Place cones to mark off a 15 by 15 yard area.
Players: Each player has a ball and finds an open space in the box.
Coaches: Line up on the side or roam with players.
Instructions:

  1. Explain to players that when they dribble they are painting an area on the floor and the goal is to paint as much of the box as possible in the time given.
  2. On “Go!”, players dribble in the box trying to cover as much floor space as possible.

Option: Have them paint (dribble) with only their left foot, then their right foot.

Simon Says
Field: Full gym.
Players: Each have a ball and line up facing one coach.
Coaches: Each have a ball. One Simon.
Instructions:

  1. Call out command such as roll back (and forth), toe tap, shuffle, step over, body parts, juggles, body skills.
  2. Players to copy you if the command was preceded by “Simon says.”
  3. If player does command when coach didn’t say “Simon says,” the player has to move to side and sit down.
  4. Whichever player wins takes over Simon from coach.
Spelling Bee
Field: Full gym.
Players: Each players has a ball.
Coaches: Each coach has a ball.
Instructions:

  1. Players practice spelling their name with ball by rolling the ball with the bottom of one foot primarily and jumping on the other leg.
  2. Try a second time and see if they can beat their first time.
  3. Try a third time with their opposite foot.
  4. Call out a work and see who can spell it the fastest with the ball.
  5. Have the two fastest spellers come to the front and have a race with a new word.
Spider’s Web
Field: Full gym.
Players: Line up along one side facing other side.
Coaches: Line up at end opposite players as spiders with back to players and with balls lined up slightly behind coaches.


Instructions:

  1. When spiders’ backs are turned away, players sneak up and collect a ball and try to dribble back to their side before spider turns and tags them.
  2. Any player that is tagged becomes a spider.
Statues

Field: Full gym.
Players: Each player has a ball.
Coaches: Each coach has a ball.

Instructions:

  1. Players simply dribble around until you call “Freeze!” At that point, players must stop their ball and stand like a statue. No moving, twitching, or giggling.
  2. Try to make them laugh.
Tag …
Tag
Field: Place cones to mark off a 15 by 15 yard area.
Players: Each players has a ball.
Coaches: Line up outside the box.


Instructions:

  1. On “Go!”Players dribble ball in box and try to tag other players with their hand. Players cannot leave their ball to tag a player.
  2. Have them keep track of how many players they tag to try to beat their score on the next game.

Option: Players must tag the other players’ knees.

Freeze tag
Field: Full gym.
Players: Each player has a ball.
Coaches: Line up on side.
Instructions:

  1. Pick one or two players to be freeze monsters.
  2. On “Go!”, players dribble around trying to avoid the freeze monsters who are also dribbling and trying to tag players who are dribbling.
  3. A tagged (frozen) player must stand still holding their ball over their head.
  4. Players can be unfrozen by other players who are still dribbling tagging them.
  5. If all players are frozen, start a new game with new freeze monsters.
Hospital tag
Field: Full gym.
Players: Each player has a ball.
Coaches: Line up on side as doctors.
Instructions:

  1. Same instructions as regular tag, except each time a player is tagged they must place their hand on the spot they were tagged while continuing to dribble.
  2. When tagged a third time, players have no more hands to cover the tags, so they must go to the hospital to see the doctor.
  3. The coaches act as doctors and performs a magical task to heal the player so they can continue playing the game.
Treasure Hunt
Field: Full gym.
Players: Each players has a ball.
Coaches: Line up on side.
Instructions:

  1. Scatter the cones over the floor as the treasure.
  2. Have the players line up on one side with their balls.
  3. On “Go!”, the players dribble out and pick up the treasures and then dribble with the treasure and give it to the coach.

Option: Rather than giving the treasure to the coach, the player wears the treasure (on arm or head).

What time is it, Mr Wolf?
Field: Full gym.
Players: Each players has a ball.
Coaches: One coach at a time is the wolf.
Instructions:

  1. Wolf (coach) stands on one side with back to players while players line up with their ball on opposite side facing wolf.
  2. Players call out “What time is it Mr. Wolf?”
  3. Mr. Wolf calls out a time which is the number of steps the players must dribble towards the wolf.
  4. When wolf call out “Dinner Time!”, the players must quickly turn and dribble to their end before Mr. Wolf tags them.

Option: Let players take turns being Mr. Wolf.
