Indoor Training Sessions (U5-U6) | Week 1: Dribbling

Warm-up Game: Sharks and Minnows (10 min.)

Setup

Field: Full gym.

Players: Each player gets a ball and lines up in a row at one end facing the other end. Players are the minnows.

Coaches: Line up as the sharks in the centre facing the minnows.

Instructions
  1. Start off by allowing the players to dribble to the other end and back.
  2. Coaches then attempt to take the ball away from the player.
  3. If the player’s ball is taken away, they must sit on the side.
  4. Continue until there is one player left standing.
  5. Restart game.

Option. To make it more fun:

  1. To start the game, the coach sings : “Fishy, fishy swimming in the sea” and the players respond with “Sharky, sharky you can’t catch me.”
  2. Turn the last player standing into a shark.
Coaching points

Encourage the players to:

  • Keep the ball close to maintain control.
  • Move as quickly as possible.
  • Keep their head up as much as possible.
  • Use both feet and both sides of the foot (not their toes).

 

Technical: Dribbling in box (15 min.)

Setup

Field: Place cones to mark off a 15 by 15 yard area.

Players: Each player gets a ball and finds some space inside the box.

Coaches: Line up outside the box or roam inside the box.

Instructions
  1. Have players start dribbling inside the box using both feet and using both sides (inside and outside) of foot.
  2. Coach raises hand with different number of fingers and players must call out the number of fingers.
  3. Introduce basic turns such as pull backs (using bottom of foot) and cut backs (using inside or outside of foot).
Coaching points

Encourage the players to:

  • Keep the ball close to maintain control.
  • Move as quickly as possible.
  • Keep their head up as much as possible.
  • Use both feet and both sides of the foot (not their toes).
  • Dribble into open spaces.

 

Small-sided game: Numbers (10 min.)

Setup

Field: Full gym. Setup two goals, with one at  each end.

Players: Players line up with their team around their goal.

Coaches: Line up on the side and feed in balls one at a time.

W1 SS Game

Instructions
  1. Divide the players into two teams.
  2. For each team, give each player a number starting at 1. If there is an odd number of players, give the first player on the opposite team an additional number.
  3. Call out one or more numbers (1v1, 2v2, and so on) and have each player with the called number try to score against the opposing team.
  4. Players who are not called are the goaltenders but they cannot use their hands.
Coaching points

Encourage the players to:

  • Keep the ball close to maintain control.
  • Move as quickly as possible.
  • Keep their head up as much as possible.
  • Use both feet and both sides of the foot (not their toes).
  • Dribble into open spaces.

Match play game (10 min)

Setup
Field: Full gym with goal  (net or cones) at each end. Players: Line up with respective teams. One team wears pinnies. Coaches: Line up with balls on side and feed in balls as necessary. Match Game
Instructions
  1. Have one team put on pinnies.
  2. Have both teams line up in a logical formation with plenty of space between the players.
  3. One team starts with the ball at centre field.
  4. If a goal is scored, the game is restarted at centre field.
  5. Try to coach from the sidelines but let the game flow and do not overcoach.
Coaching points
Encourage the players to:
    • Keep a diamond shape.
    • Pass to their teammates.
    • Use both feet.
    • Use the inside of their foot to shot and pass.

10 minutes.
