Indoor Training Sessions (U5-U6) | Week 3: Passing

Warm-up Game: Body Part Dribble (10 min.)

Setup

Field: Place cones to mark off a 15 by 15 yard area.

Players: Each player gets a ball and finds some space inside the box.

Coaches: Line up outside the box or roam inside the box.

W1 Tech2

Instructions
  1. Have players start dribbling and listening to commands from the coach.
  2. When you call out a body part, players must touch that body part to the ball as quickly as possible and then continue dribbling.
  3. Mix up the body parts, the rate you call them out, and the number of body parts you call at one time.
Coaching points

Encourage the players to:

  • Keep the ball close to maintain control.
  • Move as quickly as possible.
  • Keep their head up as much as possible.

 

Technical: Basic Pass (15 min.)

Setup

Field: Full gym.

Players: Players pair up,  ball and lines up across from one another.

Coaches: Line up on side or roam amongst players.

W3 Basic Passing

Instructions
  1. Have players use the inside of their right foot to make a pass to their partner.
  2. Have the partner receive the pass with the inside of their right or left foot.
  3. Have players use the inside of their left foot to make a pass to their partner.

Option: If they are doing well, to add some fun, make it a competition and ask them to count how many good passes they can make in 1 minute.

Coaching points

Encourage the players to:

  • Face their partner when passing or receiving the ball.
  • Follow through when making the pass.
  • Make a firm and straight pass.
  • Use the inside of the foot when passing or receiving a pass.
  • Not use the bottom of their foot to stop the ball.

 

Small-sided game: Knocking Down the Castle (10 min.)

Setup

Field: Full gym. Place half the cones at one end to be knocked down and the other cones at the other end to be knocked down. For small cones, place cone on its side and lean it against the wall.

Players: Divide into two teams with one team wearing pinnies. Line up for a game.

Coaches: Line up with balls on side and feed in as necessary.

W3 Knock down castle

Instructions
  1. Line up like a game.
  2. Like a game except rather than scoring in a goal, players try to knock down the other team’s cones.
  3. Once all the cones for one team have been knocked down, start a new game.

Option. Use more than one ball.

Coaching points

Encourage the players to:

  • Follow through with the pass.
  • Make a firm and straight pass.
  • Use the inside of the foot when passing or receiving a pass.
  • Not use the bottom of their foot to stop the ball.

Match play game (10 min)

Setup
Field: Full gym with goal  (net or cones) at each end. Players: Line up with respective teams. One team wears pinnies. Coaches: Line up with balls on side and feed in balls as necessary. Match Game
Instructions
  1. Have one team put on pinnies.
  2. Have both teams line up in a logical formation with plenty of space between the players.
  3. One team starts with the ball at centre field.
  4. If a goal is scored, the game is restarted at centre field.
  5. Try to coach from the sidelines but let the game flow and do not overcoach.
Coaching points
Encourage the players to:
    • Keep a diamond shape.
    • Pass to their teammates.
    • Use both feet.
    • Use the inside of their foot to shot and pass.
Time
10 minutes.
