Indoor Training Sessions (U5-U6) | Week 5: Small-sided Games/World Cup

Warm-up Game: Super Heroes and Bad Guys (10 min.)

Setup

Field: Full gym. Put three balls on top of cones at one end and same at other end.

Players: Divide into two teams with super heroes wearing capes (pinnies). Give remaining balls to bad guys team.

Coaches: Line up on side or roam with the players.

W5 Cops and Robbers

Instructions
  1. Bad guys use balls to knock over balls on cones (building) at either end while super heroes try to stop the bad guys from knocking over the balls.
  2. Super heroes must replace the balls on cones (rebuild the city) as quickly as possible.
  3. When all the balls are knocked over, the game is over and roles are switched.

Option: To add more fun, have the players call out the super hero they want to be.

Coaching points

Encourage the players to:

  • Keep the ball close to maintain control.
  • Pass to their teammate.
  • Move as quickly as possible.
  • Keep their head up as much as possible.
  • Use both feet and both sides of the foot (not their toes).
Time

10 minutes.

 

4 Goals Game (15 min.)

Setup

Field: Full gym. In each corner, place a goal (net or cones).

Players: Stay in teams.

Coaches: Line up with balls on side and feed in balls when necessary.

W5 4 Goal Game

Instructions
  1. Players have two goals to score on when attacking and two goals to defend when defending.
  2. If play gets too crowded, yell out new ball and play ball into open area.
Coaching points

Encourage the players to:

  • Keep the ball close to maintain control.
  • Move as quickly as possible.
  • Keep their head up as much as possible.
  • Use both feet and both sides of the foot (not their toes).
  • Dribble into open spaces.
Time

15 minutes.

 

Match Play Game: World Cup (10 min.)

Setup

Field: Full gym. Use cones to divide gym in half to create two fields. Setup goals using cones at each end.

Players: Half of each team stays on one field and the other half goes to second field. Same with second team.

Coaches: Line up on side. Coaches watches different game.

W5 World Cup

Instructions
  1. Each player on each team is given a number.
  2. Call out the numbers to play (e.g., 1’s and 2’s) with remaining players being goalies, but cannot use their hands.
  3. Players try to score on other team’s goal.

Option:

  • Give each team a number.
  • Play two minute games using all players.
  • Have every team play each other.
  • Top two teams play for gold and third and fourth play for bronze.
Coaching points

Encourage the players to:

  • Keep the ball close to maintain control.
  • Move as quickly as possible.
  • Keep their head up as much as possible.
  • Use both feet and both sides of the foot (not their toes).
  • Dribble into open spaces.
Time

10 minutes.

Match play game (10 min)

Setup
Field: Full gym with goal  (net or cones) at each end. Players: Line up with respective teams. One team wears pinnies. Coaches: Line up with balls on side and feed in balls as necessary. Match Game
Instructions
  1. Have one team put on pinnies.
  2. Have both teams line up in a logical formation with plenty of space between the players.
  3. One team starts with the ball at centre field.
  4. If a goal is scored, the game is restarted at centre field.
  5. Try to coach from the sidelines but let the game flow and do not overcoach.
Coaching points
Encourage the players to:
    • Keep a diamond shape.
    • Pass to their teammates.
    • Use both feet.
    • Use the inside of their foot to shot and pass.
Time
10 minutes.
